Dorothy R Carney Obituary

Dorothy Ruth Carney died on July 23, 2021 at the age of 95. Dorothy was born on Christmas Day 12/25/1925 in Morgantown West Virginia to her mother Zorah Wilcox and Maxwell Furman.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Harry A. Carney who served in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was also preceded in death by her son Craig A. Carney who was a teacher in the Manchester school district until his retirement. Dorothy is survived by her daughter-in-law Nancy Carney , children Mark Carney (Sherri), Donald Carney (Janet), David Carney, and Jill Thewlis (Richard). She had 7 grandchildren: Alan Carney (Twanette), Clint Carney (Monica), Chad Carney (Amanda), Heather Gasaway (Michael), Jennifer Pendergast (Aaron), David Thewlis (Robyn) and Sarah Thewlis ( fiance’ Aric Williams ) as well as great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy and Harry served as missionaries in India for almost 3 years prior to serving churches in Ashland, Chardon, Struthers, Conneaut, Mayfield Village, Akron, and Massillon until Harry’s untimely death in 1974. Dorothy graduated from the University of Akron with a degree in Art Education in June 1973. She then taught in the Massillon school district until she retired, she then was a substitute teacher in various schools until she was almost 80 years old. Dorothy was a creative and gifted artist. She loved teaching young people how to express themselves through their artwork.

Dorothy was an active member of Manchester United Methodist church for over 45 years where she participated in adult Sunday school, the Senior Ministry, vacation bible school, and other activities over the years. Dorothy had special church friends, especially Betty Sealy, Elsie Fry and too many others to name.

Dorothy had a special love for her cottage in the Muskoka region of Ontario. She and Harry were given the property as a wedding gift in 1944 by the Applegath family and were able to build a cottage that became a very special place for the Carney family for over 60 years.

Dorothy’s greatest love was for her family. She loved to have family gatherings in her house in Manchester, she loved Christmas and was often shopping throughout the year to buy Christmas presents for her children and grandchildren. She had a knack for picking out the best toys for her grandchildren and sometimes funny ‘gag’ gifts for her sons. She especially loved to give sweaters to her family members each Christmas which sometimes was referred to as ‘National Sweater Day’ in the Carney family.

Her family wants to thank her caregivers who took care of her in her home and then the staff at Danbury Senior Living (especially the Memory Care Unit nursing staff) where she resided until death and for Traditions Hospice staff who took special care for Dorothy at the end of her life. She passed away peacefully in her sleep. She lived a long and wonderful love-filled life. She was a blessing for her family, church and students.
